About

About Science 1on1:

In Science 1on1, each participant is randomly paired to meet and discuss science with another participant from a different research group in a round robin format. Every calendar month, a new randomised pairing is computed from the pool of participants.

Science 1on1 is based on the following concepts:

Benefits of Science 1on1
Each meeting should be seen as an opportunity to discuss science: advice should be sought and given regarding recent progress on research projects, technical/experimental details, future directions, manuscripts in preparation and general science knowledge. We hope that participants will develop new collaborations, create new research/social networks, learn new techniques and/or learn more about current research in other groups. It is a great opportunity to generate more interactions at all levels between group members.

Science 1on1 interactions
Science 1on1 should be seen as a friendly and informal meeting. It is important that participants not be intimidated if they are paired with group leaders or senior researchers, and the scheme aims to be a framework for informal yet informative interactions that afford all of us an outside view of our research. We advise you to limit discussions to science and to engage in a mutual discussion - we all have much to learn from each other.

How to participate?
Ensure you create an account with Science 1on1 (log in with your zID and password), indicate the group you belong to and optionally upload a photo and a brief description of your role and research interests. In order to be paired in upcoming rounds of Science 1on1, you need to ensure that your status is set to "Participating" (you can change this under Membership > Update Status). Your status will remain as an active participant for subsequent rounds unless you change your status to "Not Participating", which we recommend you do in case you are temporarily unavailable to participate in the scheme. When you are ready to participate again, you simply change your status back to "Participating" before the end of the calendar month so as to be included in the pairing for the subsequent round.

Announcement of pairs
Pairings will be announced at 8am on the first day of each calendar month (corresponding to a round of Science 1on1), excluding December and January months. You will find information about your pair under "My Dashboard" once you log in to Science 1on1.

About your Science 1on1 meeting
Please arrange a meeting of no less than 60 min at a venue and time of mutual convenience and choice. The email address of your pair is found in your dashboard page.
Before your meeting please make sure you have thought about and planned the topic you want to discuss with your pair, and if you want to show them data / slides / a manuscript, that these are prepared in time for your meeting.

Please ensure that your meeting takes place before the end of the current calendar month.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Maté.

We sincerely hope that you will find this experience rewarding and useful for your research.
Have a great meeting!
